Want to 'honor', not the Accord, the Clothingmakers

BGMEA, a garment industry owner, wants to stop the activities of the European buyers working in the garment factories. For this reason, the organization has taken initiatives to make a separate platform to understand the activities of North American buyers alliance as well as the Accord. They have finalized a draft plan called 'Honor'. Many leaders of the BGMEA said that the green signal of the government was well matched.The Prime Minister's Office will implement the BGMEA's original plan of honor. It will be linked to international labor organizations (ILOs), foreign brands and merchants and labor organizations to make the initiative acceptable in the international arena. Meanwhile, the BGMEA has negotiated a few rounds of correspondence with representatives of all concerned. A special team of the organization is working on this matter.

BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman said in the first light on Saturday night, "Accord and Alliance will not be in whole life in Bangladesh." The government must have a platform to keep their activities consistent. We're working for that. However, the matter is still in the initial stage. "The discussion will be discussed in the Special General Meeting of the organization on Sunday at Radisson Hotel in Dhaka.After the collapse of Rana Plaza in Savar in April 2013, the Accord and Alliance were formed for the development of the garment factories for five years. Under the two agreements, the structural inspection of fire, electric and building of more than two thousand ready-made garment factories has been completed. The Accord and the Alliance are currently supervising the reforms of factories.In the middle of next year, the deadline for the coalition will end. But in the last week of May, the Accord announced, will run the program till May 31, 2021. It is known that the BGMEA leaders were stuck after the Accord announcement. Finalizing the draft of the new platform, two ministers and senior officials of the Prime Minister's Office met with the meeting. However, the matter was being worked out for quite some time. A positive attitude has been found from 60-65 brands and buyers. Even North American buyers' alliance Alliance did not object to this new initiative.An Alliance official said yesterday, the time of alliance like the Accord would not increase. However, it may take more than a few months to complete the activities. The contract for nearly 60 officials of the alliance's Dhaka office will end on July 10 next year.According to BGMEA sources, the Prime Minister's Office may under a project to undertake new platform for the inspection and renovation of garment factories. For the highest policy-making, the representatives of the BGMEA, BKMEA, ILO, Brand, Trade Union, Trade and Labor Ministry and the Inspection Department of Fisheries and Institution will be in the Steering Committee. Each of them has equal voting power. Besides, there will be a Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer in the top rank. In order to increase acceptance, the posts may be deployed overseas.Asked, BGMEA Vice President Mahmud Hasan Khan said yesterday, "The new venture will have institutional structure. Member factories will finance for this. Money will not be taken from brands and purchasers. All garment factories, including factories, alliances and under the National Work Plan, will be brought under the honor. 'Mahmud Hassan Khan said the Accord argued for the new extension of time, that no government agency has been formed to carry out their activities. That's why a separate initiative was needed. The final structure of honor will be announced later this year.
